Hypertension Medical ID
What Should You Put on a Hypertension Medical ID?
It is always best to consult with your doctor or specialist to decide what to engrave on your hypertension medical ID. In the event that this is not possible, we have taken advice from the lovely doctors at Concierge Medical (the multi award-winning private GP service for the Cotswolds and surrounding areas) and recommend the following:
As a minimum, you should put the following on your Hypertension medical ID:
- Your diagnosis.
- Your name.
- Your primary ICE (in case of emergency number).
You may also want to include the following:
- Any other severe medical conditions (including allergies).
- Any medications you may be on.
- “See medical card” (if you choose to carry a medical ID card in your phone case or wallet).
General advice on engraving:
- information should relate to conditions not otherwise discoverable by examination of an unconscious or incapacitated patient.
- Important medications should be listed.
- Information should be relevant to life-saving or emergency treatment.
- Avoid using general terms, e.g. “Allergies: bee stings, nuts” is much more useful than just “Allergies”.
Should You Wear a Medical Bracelet for High Blood Pressure?
High blood pressure, or hypertension, varies in severity and can be treated in a combination of ways, from simple lifestyle changes to medication. For some people, hypertension is caused by diabetes or kidney disease. In an emergency, it’s important for first responders to have access to key information about your blood pressure, particularly if it is normally high, and any other serious medical conditions. The emergency services will then know that your high blood pressure is not a symptom to be treated, but a pre-existing condition. This information will also help them to provide treatment and monitoring that is appropriate to your medical condition(s).
It is a good idea to wear a hypertension medical ID bracelet to give you and those around you peace of mind that, in the event of an emergency, first responders will have a rapid insight into your condition which can inform their diagnosis and your treatment. Your medical ID alert speaks for you when you can’t.
