Do You Need A Bracelet or Medical ID For Autism?

Autism, Asperger’s syndrome and other autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) are lifelong, developmental disabilities which affect people in different ways and to varying degrees. A medical id can help first responders, medical staff and other emergency services understand why the wearer might find communication a challenge and help to provide context for the wearer’s behaviour.

An autism medical ID in the form of a medical alert bracelet, necklace, or wristband also provides a vital link to the wearer’s family or carer with the inclusion of “in case of emergency” contact details.

What Should You Put on an Autism Medical ID?

It is always best to consult with your doctor or specialist to decide what to engrave on your autism medical ID. In the event that this is not possible, we have taken advice from the lovely doctors at Concierge Medical (the multi award-winning private GP service for the Cotswolds and surrounding areas) and recommend the following:

• As a minimum, you should put the following on your autism medical ID:
• Wearer’s name.
• Primary ICE (in case of emergency) name and number.
• Your autism diagnosis.
• Any medications you are on to help manage your autism.
• You may also want to include the following:
• Any other severe medical conditions (including allergies).
• Any other medications you may be on.
• “See medical card” (if you choose to carry a medical ID card in your phone case or wallet).
  
  

If you choose a medical id bracelet that can be engraved on both the front and the back, we recommend engraving the autism diagnosis, name and ICE on the front and any additional medical information on the back. Including the wearer’s and ICE contact names will allow first responders to provide an additional level of reassurance to the wearer.

• General advice on engraving:
• information should relate to conditions not otherwise discoverable by examination of an unconscious or incapacitated patient.
• Important medications should be listed.
• Information should be relevant to life-saving or emergency treatment.
• Avoid using general terms, e.g. “Allergies: bee stings, nuts” is much more useful than just “Allergies”.

In case of an emergency, it's important that those with severe autism attack wear, or keep with them at all times, some form of medical identification in case of an emergency.

A wristband can be a handy way of doing this as they’re comfortable and convenient to wear throughout the day and evening, indoors and out.
