How To Choose The Right Medical ID For You

4th Jul 2024

Choosing the right medical ID can sometimes feel like a daunting task, with so much choice it can be difficult to know which item is best for you. It’s important to remember when choosing that the main role of a medical ID is to provide vital information during emergencies.

Another consideration is individual needs and lifestyle, for example, do you need something waterproof that you can wear whilst swimming? A lot of choosing the right product for you also comes down to personal preference, e.g. would you prefer to wear a bracelet or would you prefer a necklace?

Medical ID Bracelet or Necklace

Emergency services are trained to check both wrists and neck in an emergency. A medical bracelet tends to be more easily accessible and visible, but a medical necklace is just as helpful if you prefer not to wear anything around your wrist on a daily basis.

Along with your personal preference for a bracelet or necklace, lifestyle also plays an important role, for examplewill you be wearing it 24/7? If so, comfort is a top priority and therefore a silicone wristband may better.Or are you someone that prefers a dressier, jewellery looking piece like a neck pendant?

Comfort and Fit

It’s important you choose something you will feel comfortable wearing on a regular basis. Checking an item will be a proper fit before purchasing ensures you will be able to consistently wear your medical ID. Our handy sizing guide can help you choose a comfortable medical ID - How to measure your wrist

Other factors to consider are the weight and width of the product, all of which can be found in the product description.

Adjustable Options

Adjustable medical ID bracelets and wristbands are a great solution for growing wrists or those that may have fluctuations in wrist size. This will ensure that your medical ID still remains comfortable even if your wrist size changes. You can view our adjustable items here: Adjustable Medical ID

When discussing adjustable items, it’s also worth noting that most of our products can also be re-sized before we send them out, including necklace chains. If you are unsure about sizing please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Material Selection

Our medical bracelets and necklaces come in a variety of different materials, from soft and strong silicone to robust stainless steel. Whilst stainless steel and silicone are the most commonly used materials for medical IDs due to their durability, there are also other materials such as leather, sterling silver and titanium. When choosing a medical ID you may be driven by aesthetic appeal and want something that fits in with the other jewellery you currently wear, for instance some people may only want to wear gold coloured items so we would recommend one of our gold plated products like these ones here: Gold Plated Medical ID

Durability and Longevity

It’s important to select a medical ID that is durable and can withstand daily wear. You may also want to consider if there will be exposure to water or even harsh conditions. Materials such as Stainless Steel, Silicone and Titanium all have increased longevity and durability over other materials like Leather or Sterling Silver.

Waterproof Considerations

Waterproof medical ID is a must for those who will be wearing theirs in water, whether that be when swimming, bathing or even washing up. One benefit of having a waterproof medical ID is that you don’t need to worry about removing it,so you can have peace of mind when in the water. Another benefit is that waterproof medical IDs are more resistant to daily wear and tear. Our Silicone, Stainless Steel and Titanium products are all waterproof and each waterproof product shows a “Safe in water” icon in the product description. If you are unsure whether a product is waterproof, please contact our customer services team who will be more than happy to help.

Engraving

When selecting a medical ID, you may have a preference regarding whether you want the information on the front, back or both. Some people prefer to keep their information more private, so opt for a product with just back/ inside engraving.Whereas others would prefer their important medical information to be on the outside so it is the first thing people see. If you have a lot of information, you may opt for a product that can have both front and back engraving so you have more room to fit all of the details. If you cannot fit all of your required details onto your item, we suggest you engrave / mark the last line to read "See Medical ID Card" and purchase a Medical Identity Cards like these ones here: Medical ID Cards

When engraving your information, we always maximise the text to the largest font size that will fit. Thisis to ensure the engraving is legible and clear.

Interchangeable Options

A lot of medical IDs are interchangeable, meaning you can customise your bracelet for different occasions or outfits. You may opt to have an engraved tag like this one and pair it with our Blank Band Mixed Bundle which gives you 8 different versatile colours to choose from.

Non-Interchangeable Options

Whilst lots of people like the choice and flexibility interchangeable options give, others prefer the security and permanence of a non-interchangeable medical ID.

Non-interchangeable medical IDs mean that the information is permanently attached to the ID, whether this be a silicone band that has been engraved directly into the silicone (rather than a removeable tag) or a metal bracelet that has a fixed engraved plate. Non-interchangeable medical IDs are usually the preferred choice for those who will be wearing their ID 24/7.

Dexterity with Medical Bracelets

There are many different fastenings and clasps available so thinking about your level of dexterity can sometimes play a key role in choosing the right medical ID for you.

If you are someone who has dexterity issues or challenges, then a wristband that stretches over the hand and onto the wrist is a great solution rather than a bracelet with a clasp. Another option would be a bracelet with a magnetic fastening like our Adjustable Mesh Bracelet.
